Plate Tectonics Saved My Marriage

Originally a gestural copy of Rubens' "Abduction of the Daughters of Leucippus", I painted out all the players except one dude, one histrionic nude and part of one horse. This piece embodies pretty much all the elements of the new style: classical reference, loose painterly abstraction, crude doodle images, photo-real figuration and pop culture graphics. The accidental santa hat on the horse reminds me of German painter Neo Rauch. I like the way nobody's looking at each other... are the monumental figures gods, whose struggles are invisible to the clearly mortal cyclist? Are the cartoon animals waving to him to assist the damsel? Or are they mistaking her gesture and happily waving back? The flying bows/butterfly squiggles appear again, contributing to the visual melee. And finally, the quietest corner where she looks beseechingly, top right, ends with the punctuation of a ring of stars visible in the daylight sky, a nod to Titian's "Bacchus and Ariadne", possibly my favorite painting of all time. The title, while mostly aiming for absurdity, could be a testimony to the largest, most dramatic forces (earthquakes, mythical baroque kidnappings) and the profound effects they have on our personal lives.
